I killed a duck today...

by accident....

It was very strange. We were riding along in our tiny gray oxymoron car at about 100km and I saw a big colorful bird ahead in the road. In the opposing lane of traffic was a big truck and several cars following it. The truck approached, but the duck didn't move. I beeped my horn and the duck flew up and I immediately thought, thank goodness, that was clo...s...e........and the crazy bird did a boomerang, 180 degree turn swooping back down toward the road and plowed into the front grill of our car. I remember thinking as I saw it turn around, "what a beautiful bird" and the immediate next thought was "NNNOOOOOOOOOOO!" It had a mainly white head with a gold band of feathers around its neck. All of this happened in about 1.2 seconds.

Fuck, fuck fuck. I know it was an accident, but it broke my heart to look into the rear view mirror and see its broken body on the road, feathers separated from its body, flying in and around the cars. I had already been slowing down and pulled over as soon as I could after shouting a few good "fucks" while hitting the steering wheel with my palms. I needed a minute or two to dilute the adrenaline in my blood and to re-live it in my head a few thousand times. Poor thing. Hubby thinks it could have been sick or even a pet because it didn't react to the truck which was 10 times the size of our car, yet it flew up when I beeped my horn. Weird.

It's also the third time in my life that the same thing has happened. The first time was with a squirrel that ran right under my car, the second time was a small dog which did the same thing and ran away limping while I tried to follow it on foot, but it disappeared. Each event was equally horrific.

Oh, and it was the second day in a row that a bird flew right at me, within a meter of me.

Have any of you ever hit or ran over an animal accidently?

How sad. It's indeed strange that the duck didn't react normal...
I once hit a pigeon with my right car mirror... she went head firt right against the mirror... then fell to the ground, then took of again to the side. Never really killed an anymal with my car that I know of.

It is quite shocking when it happens, isn't it? I've seen a bird come towards a window in a building and crashing against it. We all assumed it was dead, but within 5 minutes it stood up, gave a little shake, then flew off again.

How awful, but there was nothing you could do. Just a fluke.
When I live in PA I would see dead animals by the side of the road all the time. Very sad. I once ran over a racoon, not pleasant. The scariest are deers. I can't tell you the number of times I had a close call with a deer.

And of course, I've seen a gazillion happy ducks since then. Yes, the deer in PA are quite brazen and plentiful. I've seen too many bodies on the side of the PA turnpike and Interstate 80.

Not lately, but in 1988, I hit a golden retriever who jumped out of his owner's pickup truck on the highway. I wanted to kill the sonofabitch.

some people are such idiots. and you know the moron was thinking, "MY dog would never jump out of the back of MY truck." Too bad the guy himself didn't jump out and you hit him instead of the dog...would have been a great addition to the Darwin awards.

This sort of thing happens a lot if you live in the country...

Once I driving on a quiet, unlighted country highway near my house in Ottawa. I noticed a mother raccoon in time, but her babies almost too late. As it turns out, I hadn't run over any of the babies but I didn't know that until I came home by the same road a few hours later and boy was I upset until then.
Once a rabbit practically jumped under my mom's wheels when we were driving. Even though there was nothing she could do about it, she was really upset.
Another time I saw a duck in the highway that had been hit and wasn't quite finished dying. It broke my heart. I knew the animal was beyond help but that I couldn't leave it there to suffer either. I felt the only thing I could do was the run over it nice and square to kill it quickly, but I didn't know if I could do it. I turned around... I think once I got there, though, it was dead.

Oh, it is so scarey when it happens and you just can't do anything about it. You're right, I've seen in the countryside in PA hundreds of times. When I was about 5 years old, our family was riding to my Aunts house on a dirt road and there was a raccoon right in the middle of the road foaming at the mouth. My father said it looked like it was rapid, so he ran it over with the car. Not an experience I'm ever likely to forget...

who knows if it was rabid or not...

I hit a cat while learning to drive :( It ran off so I don't know what happened to it but I refused to drive for weeks after that.

Also hit a skunk in the middle of summer with all the windows open...nice

you must have been beside yourself when you hit that cat...that's just horrible. And the skunk...never hit one, but I've ridden over the freshly maimed bodies of super fresh and rank smelling skunks on too many occasions...so nasty. And the smell takes forever to get out of your nostrils!

I was so upset, I had to get out of the car right then and there and make my Mom drive the rest of the way home. I woudln't even consider driving for weeks. It was awful.

Yeah fresh dead skunk is nasty and it also takes forever to get out of your car, course the first time you turn the heat on it comes back to ya.
